They have the remnants of a website here, but before it disappears into the ether here’s the bio from it :
The story so far…“I reckon the North Beach riot, Christmas night 1993, was the wildest gig.” says Mutt guitarist Phil Nixon. ” Six hundred people a dude surfing on the roof, the riot squad, front page headlines around the country, even CNN world news coverage, filth…” They’ve supported heaps of Australian and overseas bands; played at the Big Day Out in 1996; toured Sydney and Melbourne twice; released a self titled CD. They’re about to release their second CD called “Gallows Apple” through Phantom Music on the Rocket Label. Six in ya face tracks that show the punkier side of the band. Two of the songs ( CMT and Wades Break) were composed by former lead guitarist, the late Aaron Franche. “This CD is dedicated to Aaron.” says the whole band. The songs were recorded in Perth at Upper Room Studios. Damien Ward engineered and mixed the band live to DAT, no overdubs or funny stuff. What you get is a true representation of what the band sound like live. “Yeah it was a bit of a fluke getting Damien as our engineer.” says singer Wade O. “He’s mixed us live stacks of times, and always pulled a good sound. So we just said … make us sound, like we sound in the pub. And he did.” Mick Watson from Phantom Music heard the CD and loved it. The band scored a deal on the Rocket Label and will release a follow up full length CD early next year, as well as an eastern states tour to promote it. “They huff and they puff and they really do blow the house down.” said William (the toughest critic in Perth) Bowe, X-Press Magazine. Mutt have consistently had favourable press, except at a certain The Mark of Cain Support ( which we won’t go into). However they got more press than they ever thought possible, when a Christmas Night party held at Wade and Phil’s house in North Beach, got a little out of hand. The Riot squad were called in to give the press something to put on the news. (Christmas night is generally a quiet one for news). Anyway it made headlines around the country, then CNN picked it up some more, and beamed it around the world. Wade recalls, “we couldn’t even go out because every TV station had a camera pointed at the house.” Mutt Have supported the following bands; All, Bad Brains, Babes in Toyland, The Mark of Cain, The Fireballs, The Meanies, Tumbleweed, Screamfeeder, Bodyjar, The Hard-ons, Celebrate Rifles, Painters and Dockers, Def FX, Cosmic Psychos, Front End Loader, Grinspoon, Exploding white mice, Psychotic Turnbuckles, Ricaine, Bigger than Jesus, Non intentional lifeform, plus the Perth leg of the 96 Big Day Out where they shared the stage with the Prodigy. To make your own Mutt you will need; Alec McGowan on Drums. Mark Middleton on Lead Guitar’ Wade O singing, Damien Pearce on bass, and Phil Nixon on guitar and bio writing. Pop that in the microwave and enjoy!!! Gallows Apple will be released in November so Check it out….. |
Mutt were pretty much one of the most authentic examples of Australian pub/punk rock that Perth ever saw. Desert boots, Holden Station Wagons, Dreadlocks, Surfers, they ticked every box.
I remember hearing about them on Critical Mass on RTR when the guy from The Spicy Baby Tomatoes was presenting it. They played bloody everywhere and with everyone. I first saw them at a house in Scarborough when I was still in High School. I was working at Karrinyup Shopping Centre and was riding my bike home and heard someone playing drums, so I dumped my bike on the front lawn of the house it was coming from and just walked in the open front door and said hi. It turned out to be the drummer of Mutt. We exchanged pleasantries and he wasn’t bothered that a random 16 year old kid had wandered into his house and played me a bunch of Mutt songs. This cemented my decision to become a drummer.
That same year was when they held a Christmas night party at the infamous 107 West Coast Drive (the title of one of their albums). I had graduated high school that year and was there with most of my friends. Everyone climbed on the roof of the house. Mutt played in the front yard by memory. The Police came. The TV cameras came. We were all on the news. It was fucking amazing.
Must have seen them 100 times through the years from the infamous Sunday Sessions at The Castle Hotel in North Beach to the equally legendary Swanbourne Hotel alongside bands like The Externals and Storytime.
This is Mutts debut self titled LP from 1994.
And here is their LP entitled 107 West Coast Drive.
