Prawns With Horns

I saw these guys once at Yac It Up in Melville, I think anyway. I was really into ska and had no idea they existed before that fateful day around 1999. I was kinda bummed too, like I’d missed out on a local band with a horn section who could actually play. I never saw them again after that day either, go figure. They were a ‘wacky’ party band of sorts. That time I saw them was the first time I saw anyone ever use a real theremin on stage, it ruled.

Annyway it seems they toured outside of Australia quite alot, no mean feat for a pre-internet band from Perth. I’ll let their website do the rest of the horn blowing for them.

Here is their 1999 LP ‘Ampersand’.

And their 1996 LP ‘Cisco And His Disco’.

Air Ensemble

Rex Horan was in it along with members of Seahorse Radio. They were the ultimate jazz/funk/rock fusion band. I saw them like three times and it made me

question my desire to play an instrument as I was clearly not worthy.

I only have this record, I’m missing ‘The Message’ and would like it very much. UPDATE : Thanks to Senton we have this now too. GREAT!

Air Ensemble – The Message

Air Ensemble – Kardinya Lights

And heres some youtube videos of tracks from The Message :

And since then Rex has gone on to form Mamas Gun who are pretty incredible and have indeed become ‘big in japan’ :

Non Intentional Lifeform was born out of the ashes of Botticellis Angels and Rothgar. They relocated to Melbourne so I guess you could question why they’re in this blog. Whatever. They were a strong act and had a hit with the single ‘Living Or Existing’, from the Uisce LP. From what I gather the entire band left to do other things (personality clash perhaps) and Declan Barry continued on with a whole new lineup.

You can say hi to Declan on myspace here.

Heres their 1997 LP Uisce.

Incredibly popular Perth band who I don’t need to go on about too much, but they were awesome. Musta seen them 2o times. Considerate recycled cardboard cd packaging. Super quirky funk/punk rock jams. Instantly recognisable and loveable lineup. Yep that was them.

They did some amazing video clips through their career too.

This one won the won the 1998 ‘Recovery’ video competition and the 1998 West Australian screen awards for best music video.
